Bruce literally can’t help himself around Clark. There’s just a little voice telling him to be difficult and badass and he can’t ignore it.

Clark certainly always manages to get a rise out of Bruce. If you know what I mean. ;)

- In light of the breach of trust revealed to us during the Vandal Savage matter we have to decide whether Batman should be allowed to remain in the league. All those in favor of…

- Wait. Before we vote, the accused should be allowed a few words in his defense.

- Seconded.

- Okay. Batman?

fantastic-nonsense:

Superman spent his childhood baling hay on a farm, he’s a working class hero and people don’t like that. Whereas Batman is a billionaire who sleeps until three in the afternoon, puts on a rubber suit and beats the shit out of poor people. Now that’s a wish fulfilment fantasy.
Grant Morrison during a panel at the Edinburgh Book Festival

This just popped up on my dash in quote form, but I wanted people to see my response.

Mr. Morrison, what you have identified as the ‘reason people like Batman over Superman’ is INCREDIBLY insulting to comic readers, and to superhero fans in general.

Firstly, I like Clark, and I like Superman. He’s a pretty cool guy. But he’s also boring. What do you do with a character that has all these ridiculous powers and his only weaknesses are kryptonite and innocents in danger? There’s only so many times you can have him fight Zod or Lex Luthor and not have his stories become ridiculously predictable (either he’s losing because his powers have been knocked out or he’s incapacitated from kryptonite or he’s beating up the bad guys with brute force). He’s the nice guy, the everyday farm boy who really just wants to help people. And that’s not a bad thing. That’s a really good thing, and the writers (at least, the older ones) have used him as a medium to send some very powerful messages (the one where he stops the girl from jumping off the building comes to mind). The best Clark stories (which are few and far between) are the ones of his ethical struggles.

But there comes a point when you get tired of reading Clark having to overcome losing his powers to fight the bad guy, or having to outsmart Lex Luthor over and over again with the same cliche lines and battle tactics.

Enter Bruce. Now, I’ve always maintained that Bruce is static, boring, and it’s his family and his relationships with them that makes him interesting (and if you ask comic readers, most of them agree). I stand by that, but I’m going to go into Bruce for a second. Unlike Clark, who had a happy and healthy life growing up, Bruce lost his parents at a very young age, and never got over it. He became a deeply jaded and slightly bitter man, and no one can deny that he’s incredibly screwed up.

But out of his pain, his bitterness, he still seeks to help people. He wants to keep others from experiencing the same losses and helplessness that he has all his life. He doesn’t go around beating up thugs and lowlifes cause they’re poor, Morrison. He stops crimes where he sees them. Yes, he has to deal with all the psycho villains of his, but he always takes time to stop muggings. He always tries to stop the rapists, the thieves, the thugs and the drug traffickers. He does it all, because he learned the hard way that if he doesn’t do it, no one else will, because very few people actually give a flying care about what happens to the people in Gotham.

I think this quote from the Young Justice episode ‘Agendas’ sums up Bruce quite nicely, actually (and it’s not even talking about him):

Diana: You indoctrinated Robin into crime fighting at the ripe old age of nine.

Bruce: Robin needed to help bring the man that killed his family to justice.

Diana: Why, so he could turn out like you?

Bruce: So that he wouldn’t.

Bruce helped Dick catch his parents’ murderer because he didn’t want Dick to end up like him, a bitter old man who was still seeking some kind of justice. He doesn’t want people to go through the same things he did, so he tries to make sure they don’t. THIS is why people like Bats more than Supes, because he’s BEEN down the hard road. He’s BEEN beaten down and torn up inside and gone through things no man should. He’s a normal guy who plucked up enough courage to get some gadgets and beat guys up so innocents don’t get hurt. HE DOESN’T HAVE POWERS OR INVULNERABILITY TO INSURE HIS SAFETY, unlike Clark who is nigh invulnerable unless you happen to have some kryptonite handy.

I’d think you’d already know this Morrison, considering the fact that you’ve been writing Batman for years, and have written his son for pretty much the entire duration of his appearances. How strange that a quote from a cartoon that’s not even about Batman has a better grasp of Batman’s character than you do.

What makes Bruce so different than Clark is not just their different experiences or the places they live in, but their fundamental personalities. Clark is one of those fundamentally good people, the kind that bake cookies for school bake sales because they can and rescue cats from trees. Bruce is far more morally ambiguous, and that’s what makes him far more popular and a much more interesting character.

People like the ‘not knowing’ aspect of Batman. They like seeing how far he can go, how much he can toe the line without going over, how he deals with things. Because we all know how Clark’s going to react, but Bruce? He’s much more morally ambiguous, and has a broader range of things he’s willing to do verses someone like Clark who is one of those fundamentally good people who don’t (often) consider ‘cheating’ to win.

Clark being a ‘working class hero’ and Bruce being a billionaire has very little to do with how much people like them as CHARACTERS, Morrison. And if you of all people don’t understand that, then I have no hope for you as a continuing writer in the DCU.

We take Gotham from the corrupt! The rich! The oppressors of generations… who have kept you down with myths of opportunity. And we give it back to you… the people. Gotham is yours! None shall interfere. Do as you please. Step forward, those who would serve… for an army will be raised. The powerful will be ripped from their decadent nests… …and cast out into the cold world that we know and endure! Courts will be convened. Spoils will be enjoyed. Blood will be shed! The police will survive… as they learn to serve true justice. This great city… it will endure.
